PURPOSE:A herbicide for paddy fields, containing a specific carbamate derivative and a specific diphenyl ether derivative as active constituents, and having a high herbicidal activity and a long period of residual effect without exhibiting phytotoxicity to paddy rice. CONSTITUTION:A herbicide for paddy fields containing a carbamate derivative of formula I (X is 2-naphtyl or 5-indanyl, etc.; Y is O or S; Z is lower alkyl; W is phenyl or pyridyl, etc.) and a compound of formula II (R1 is Cl or CF3; R2 is Cl or H; R3 is H or lower alkoxycarbonyl, etc.) at 1:(0.1-10) weight ratio. The herbicide is capable of exhibiting a high herbicidal effect in a small amount of chemicals, and the herbicidal effect is recognized in annual weeds, e.g. barynyard grass, smallflower umbrella plant, monochoria, etc. and further remarkable herbicidal effect is observed in perennial weeds, e.g. bulrush or water nutgrass. The herbicide is effective against weeds not only in the initial growth stage but also in the advanced growth stage.
