PURPOSE:To improve the heat stability of a human epithelial cell growth factor and inactivate hepatitis viruses, by heat-treating an aqueous solution containing the human epithelial cell growth factor within a specific pH range. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous solution containing a human epithelial cell growth factor (hereinafter abbreviated to h-EGF) is heat-treated within 4-8pH range to inactivate hepatitis viruses. The heat treatment at 60 deg.C for 10hr is an effective method for inactivating the hepatitis viruses, but in the case of h-EGF, the heat stability is found to be high within 4-8pH range. The pH adjustment with 0.01-0.1M phosphoric acid buffer solution, tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane (TRIS)buffer solution or phthalic acid buffer solution gives the same results, and the stability of the h-EGF depends upon only pH regardless of the kind and concentration of the salt.
