PURPOSE:The reaction of a specific sulfonic acid or its salt with phosgen in the presence of a catalyst permits the simple and high-yield production of the titled composition used as an intermediate in photography and printing fields, with industrial advantage. CONSTITUTION:The reaction between a sulfonic acid or its salt of formula I (R is halogen, nitro, 1-5C alkyl, Ar is an organic group which is aromatic, substituted with one or more oxy-anions and one or more diazonium cations and has a quinone diazide structure; M is H, mono- - trivalent metal, organic aminocation; i is 0-5, j is 1-5) and phosgen is carried out in the presence of a catalyst in the presence or absence of a solvent to given an aromatic sulfonyl chloride bearing a quinone diazide group of formula II. In this process, the reaction completes with almost stoichiometric amounts of reagents, thus is advan tageous in making it unnecessary to remove a large excess amount of the unreacting reagents after the reaction.
