The invention relates to a device for monitoring the course of sheets separated off from a pile or from an imbricated stream and fed to the conveying means of a folding machine. The aim of the invention is to remove sheets which have been fed at an inappropriate time from the folding process before they are introduced into a folding mechanism, to reduce machine stoppage time. To achieve this, a device for monitoring the course of the sheets is required, by means of which a deviation from the correctly timed course of the sheets can be determined before the folding mechanisms have been reached. The object is achieved in that the course of the sheets which is correctly timed for a feeding time which depends on the belt distance which has been covered is supplied in the form of an electrical signal to the respective outlets of a shift register, and this correctly timed course of the sheets is compared with the actual course of the sheets from the time of feeding onwards. To this end, preferably a plurality of optoelectronic transmitters are connected to a toggle via a plotting unit and arranged at defined positions along the running path of the sheets, for scanning the front edges of the sheets. <IMAGE>
