For partitioning off neighbouring sections of a building in the area of wall passages for pipelines, there is provided a fire protection device which is formed by an insert which has a clear width corresponding to the cross-section of the pipe, interrupts the pipeline in the area of the wall passage and is connected to the wall, the insert comprising an outer heat-resistant protective tube, an inner lining of a flame-retardant fireproof material which swells under the effect of heat, for example based on sodium silicate, and at least one steel tube attached on one side and having a flap subjected to a closing force and held in the open position by a thermal release. If excessive temperatures occur in the section of the building to be partitioned off, the thermal release is triggered, the flap swings closed under the closing force and the material of the lining swells in such a way that it covers the free cross-section of the pipeline.
