PURPOSE:To obtain a catalyst which can perform various treatments such as desulfurization in concurrence with the efficient decomposition of heavy oil into light-weight fractions, by adjusting the distributions of pores and pore volume in a composition comprising specified iron-contg. zeolite and an inorganic oxide. CONSTITUTION:Type-faujasite iron-contg. aluminosilicate zeolite is prepared from type-faujasite or -Y zeolite having the mol ratio of silica to alumina above 4.6, Na2O content of 2.4wt% or less and a large effective cavity size as a raw material. The adjustment of its pore size is performed by th hydrogen treatment to liberate aluminum in the presence of steam of 540-810 deg.C or the like. The obtd. composition has the pore distribution that there is the maximum value in each range of 50-500Angstrom and 500-10,000Angstrom . 30% or more of the pore volume is occupied by pores having diameters in the range of 50-500Angstrom , while 10% or more of the pore volume is occupied by pores having diameters in the range of 500-10,000Angstrom . In addition, said composition is mixed with an inorganic oxide in a manner such that the pore volume is made above 0.3cc/g.
