The field plant's growth is controlled by treating field plants mainly in the vegetative stage at a rate of 0.3 to 4.0 kg./ha with 2,2-dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-7-hydroxy-benzofuran or 2,2-dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-3-keto-7-hydroxy-benzofuran and simultaneously or subsequently with 0.5-5.0 liter of water soluble salts or metal chelates containing micro and/or mesoelements at a concentration of 5-500 g./liter. As micro- and mesoelements boron, magnesium and sulphur (in sulphate form), manganese, copper, zinc and molybdenum are used.
