A backing plate assembly (12) for a drum brake includes a first part (30) adapted for attachement to a vehicle frame and a second part (32) releasably coupled to the first part (30). The second part is made of lightweight material and the first part is adapted to releasably couple with different sizes of second parts. The second part sees no braking torque and is coupled to a reinforced portion of the first part.
