The system is typically applicable to satellite broadcasting in which the bandwidth available for picture data transmission is limited. Operating information necessary for the time multiplexed coded signals and for the retrieval of information is transmitted in various lines or parts of lines in the picture. The necessary space is made available by time compression of colour and luminance signals. - In the receiver (the sensor operates in a complementary manner) and the matched decoding circuit contains a counter preset for certain lines and part lines. The counter output operates on a programmable memory. The data output from the memory is applied to a multiplexer and then to a logic circuit to operate control signals for a luminance signal memory at the same read/write speed, and a colour memory with the same write but a different read speed. These various memories are additionally controlled by a pulse source which is also generated by the incoming signal. From these circuits the output to the receiver proper is generated.
