Gas sweeping a bath of molten metal, e.g. steel in a ladle with a casting outlet in the base, closed from inside by a stopper, is carried out by injecting, e.g. argon, through the casting outlet, with the stopper in place. A sweeping lance is inserted up the casting channel, to just below the stopper seating, and sealed in place. An elastic seal around the lance near the top is compressed axially, making it swell out radially to fill the channel. Gas under pressure passes around the stopper into the molten metal. After sweeping the seal is released and the lance withdrawn.
