Pneumatic refinement of molten cast iron, in a converter, is carried out by blowing refining gas simultaneously from above the surface, and from below through tuyeres in the base. The tuyeres each comprise a pair of co-axial ducts, and are arranged in at least two distinct groups. Blowing, through each group in turn, is switched from the first group to the second when wear around the first reaches a predetermined amount. Tuyeres in a group are distributed over a particular area of the base, so that local wear around each one does not overlap that around its neighbour.
