PURPOSE:To provide a polyester giving a fiber, film, etc. having high strength, forming little deposition of the foreign material to the circumference of the nozzle during the melt spinning of the polymer, and having high versatility, by introducing a specific unit to the molecular chain terminal of a polyester. CONSTITUTION:A bifunctional carboxylic acid composed mainly of terephthalic acid or its ester-forming derivative is made to react with one or more glycols or their ester-forming derivatives to obtain the glycol ester of the bifunctional carboxylic acid and/or its oligomer, and the obtained product is subjected to the polycondensation to obtain a polyester. In the above process, the compound of formula I (R is H or alkyl; X is OH, F, Cl, Br, CN or NH2) is added to the reaction system after the initiation of the polycondensation reaction to obtain the objective polyester containing >=10 equivalent of the terminal group of formula II per 10<6>g of the polyester.
