The present invention is in the field of finishing work for flat panes such as windows or mirrors and its subject is a machine for edging or polishing such glass on site. According to the invention, a machine comprising a turntable 5 equipped with suckers for gripping the sheet of glass 20 is characterised in that the grinder 11 and its drive motor 12 are mounted on a carriage 9 guided in straight translational movement in a direction parallel to the plane of the glass supported by the turntable, in that the plane of the glass supported by its turntable is inclined by approximately 45 DEG to the horizontal, in that the grinder-carrying carriage is normally situated in a part of the plane lying above the glass-holding turntable, and by a counterweight mechanism 22 of adjustable weight, and pulleys connected to the grinder-carrying carriage and making it possible to adjust the force stressing the carriage in the direction of the turntable to a specific value, and therefore to adjust the pressure of the grinder on the edge of the glass. Application to edging sheets of glass or mirror, especially automobile glazing and furnishing glass. <IMAGE>
