The system has a no-contact distance measuring device (15,17,23,25) sending and receiving a signal to and from a reference point. An evaluator (18,19,26) actuates a warning device (27-29) and/or a level setting device (20) to compensate for any deviation from a given distance. The distance measuring device is fixed to the wheel suspension (22,24). The reduction of the distance below the given value indicates that the tyre pressure is too low. Each wheel may have its own distance measuring device. The level setting device adjusts the angle of the vehicle's headlights and/or of the bodywork.
