PURPOSE:To easily obtain a copper alloy having excellent characteristics containing no segregated substance without generating a defect such as blister, by melting copper of a copper alloy, carbon and an element specified in the standard free energy of formation of oxide in the atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:Copper or a copper alloy, carbon and an element of which the standard free energy of formation of oxide -500kJ/mol O2 at 1,100-1,400 deg.C, for example, Zr, Y or Nb are simulaneously or successively thrown in a crucible as stock materials and melted in the atmosphere. In this case, the additive such as Zr is reacted with oxygen in the copper alloy to be precipitated as ZrO2 and the oxygen concn. in the matrix alloy is reduced. By this method, a low oxygen copper alloy reduced in impurities can be obtained in good yield.
