<p>4-(2-Indanyl- or naphthyl-vinyl) benzoic acid derivs. (I) and their physiologically tolerable salts are new (where R1 and R2 are H or CH3; R3 is 1-4C alkyl; R4 is lower alkyl such as CH3 or C2HT; R5 is COOH or (1-3C alkoxy) carbonyl; and is methylene or ethylene opt. substd. by alkyl (pref. methyl) gps.). - The new cpds. can be used for the topical and systemic prophylaxis and treatment of benign and malignant neoplasms and premalignant lesions. They can also be used for the topical and systemic therapy of acne, psoriasis and other dermatoses involving increased or pathologically altered cornification, as well as inflammatory and allergic dermatological disorders. In addition, the cpds. can be used against mucous membrane disorders involving inflammatory or degenerative, metaplastic changes, as well as rheumatic diseases.
