The process consists of (a) embedding crystalline blocks of Fe(II) or Fe(III) sulphate below the surface of the concrete blocks before they set hard. As the concrete weathers, the crystalline blocks dissolve in the water provided by the concrete so as to form a porous layer of the sulphates in the cracks from the surface, penetrating the layer or the interior of the concrete and neutralising the strong alkali contained therein; (b) covering the base blocks with a solvent such as sulphuric acid, and powdered oxide of iron, or Fe(II) or Fe(III) sulphate, and a surfactant, to form a layer of iron oxide powder which can penetrate into the block and neutralise the alkali. The surface is covered with a layer of iron sulphate or iron (IT) sulphate that penetrates into the inside of the body of the concrete. The layer is formed by having iron sulphate or iron (II) crystal blocks embedded or buried in the body of the concrete at the surface before the concrete is hardened.
