The process entails hazardous substances, such as heavy metals, being absorbed by plants, removed from the sludge and destroyed in separate systems. Multiple repetition of a planting results in the initially toxic sludge being detoxified to such an extent that it is available as fertiliser for agriculture and forestry and can be employed on natural soil without danger to the environment.
