A program control exhibits an electromechanic program switching mechanism 1 which exhibits a number of switch positions corresponding to the programs to be processed. To make it possible in this arrangement to detect errors which have occurred in the program sequence or operating errors, the program switching mechanism 1 is set into a predetermined switch position in the error case and is electrically locked in this position. This predetermined switch position is skipped in the case of fault-free program sequence. The program switching mechanism 1 therefore exhibits, in addition to the switch positions required for normal program sequence, at least one additional switch position 20, 21. <IMAGE>
