The application relates to a windscreen wiper system, in particular single-arm windscreen wiper system, for motor vehicles, having a wiper arm whose effective length can be adjusted and which can be extended and retracted as a function of the sensing of a cam plate fixed to the vehicle and can be acted on by a compression spring. Such a system is to be designed in a particularly functionally reliable fashion in that an extension of the wiper arm is displaceable in its axial direction and is guided in a housing which is involved in the swivel movement, and that the cam plate is arranged fixed within the housing and interacts with a tappet which is displaceable in a guide fixed to the housing, the changes in the vertical position of said tappet being transmitted via a cable transmission to the extension of the wiper arm.
