If a multiplicity of terminals which are fed via a power supply device are connected to a subscriber interface at the subscriber end, where data are transmitted and power is supplied via a common multi-wire data line, and if an additional power supply is provided from the switching system via the subscriber connection line which is only sufficient to supply a small number of terminals, a continuous signal is transmitted onto the data line if the power supply device fails, whereby all those terminals are de-activated via detection devices which evaluate the continuous signal and only the terminal which is intended to remain operational is not fitted with a detection device of this type. In this way, it is ensured that terminals can be disconnected from the data line during the power supply device failure and can be re-connected to the data line without being in the standby mode.
