PURPOSE:To prevent an artificial signal from entering a vertical output line by obtaining the same level between the potential of a vertical output line and the potential of a substrate while the signal is read after a horizontal scanning circuit is driven in a horizontal scanning period. CONSTITUTION:A photodiode array 51 containing a p-n junction is connected in series to an insulated gate field effect transistor TR52 for vertical switch and then switched successively by a scanner 53 with clocks. Insulated gate field effect TR56-58 are used for transfer, reset and horizontal switch purposes respectively. A preamplifier 60 is connected to a horizontal reading charge shift element 59. At the same time, a discharge insulated gate field effect TR61 is also connected in order to obtain the same level of potential between a vertical output line 55 and a substrate. Then the potential HG is set at a high level after the vertical signal is read out. While the potential of the line 55 is dropped down to the potential HD (earth) of a line 62.
