A data display device, for example a speedometer, comprises a dial 10 with a window, a coloured filter element 20 arranged to be illuminated for example from its rear, a drive means 40 which turns a spindle 50 through an angle dependent upon an input signal applied to the drive means 40, and a screen arrangement 100 which is turned by the spindle to obscure the view of the coloured filter 20 through the window 11 except over an arc corresponding to the angle to which the spindle has been turned. The screen arrangement 100 may comprise a shutter 110 driven by the spindle 50 and shutters 130,150 which are entrained in succession by the shutter 110 upon the latter being turned through predetermined angles from the rest position. The shutters may be entrained together by means of a pin and recess arrangement, a viscous friction arrangement or by a spiral spring. Each shutter preferably has a masking sector and an oppositely disposed, smaller radius sector forming a counterweight. Alternatively the opaque screen arrangement may comprise segments rigidly connected to each other and staggered relative to each other axially of the spindle (Fig. 10). <IMAGE> |
