The antibiotic designated 273a1 can be produced in the fermentation of Streptomyces paulus, strain 273, NRRL 12251, and can be resolved into the antibiotics 273a1 alpha and 273a1 beta . 273a1 can be recovered from the fermentation by solvent extraction at a pH of about 3.0 followed by adjustment of the pH to about 5.5. The antibiotics are active against various Gram-positive bacteria, and are soluble in water. |
