Device for illuminating passive displays

A device is proposed which is used for illuminating passive displays by means of a light source arranged separately from these. The device essentially consists of a disc (12) arranged in front of the display (10) and constructed to be wedge-shaped in its thickness, into which the light of a light source (13) enters via an optical fibre (15) from the thicker end of the disc (12) at the end face (12a), is reflected on the surface (12b) of the disc (12) inclined out of the plane which is perpendicular to the direction of viewing (X) and emerges on the surface (12c) of the disc (12) located at a small distance (a) from the display. This device results in illumination of the display at a steep angle, with little constructional depth and a high illumination efficiency. The device can be used both for installation in the dashboard of motor vehicles and the like and for indicating instruments in open or closed spaces which have different, variable or inadequate brightness (Figure 1). <IMAGE>
