An optical device for measuring profiles and, in particular, cutting edges of tools has a laser whose light is focused onto the profile to be determined. The light spot produced in this way is projected by means of projecting optics onto an optoelectronic receiving device to which there is connected an electronic evaluating device for producing an electrical distance signal which depends on the light of the light spot on the optoelectronic receiving device. Arranged in the beam path of the light emitted by the laser and in that of the projecting optics are tiltable or rotatable mirrors which can be moved in the same sense and synchronously, e.g. oscillate, in such a way that the location of the light spot moves on the profile to be measured and in this case the location of the light spot is situated on the optoelectronic receiving device in all deflecting positions of the laser beam on the optoelectronic receiving device. The device facilitates simple, rapid and accurate scanning of fine profiles such as, e.g., cutting edges of tools, there even being the possibility of representation on a screen. <IMAGE>
