In order to be able to find recordings/recorded items on a magnetic tape relatively quickly and accurately, marks are recorded during playback of the useful signal (music, text, ...) at normal reproducing speed at any points of the magnetic tape by a magnetic head of which the gap forms no angle or a small angle with respect to the longitudinal axis of the magnetic tape or of which the gap is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the magnetic tape, but its length is many times shorter than that of the gap of the useful signal. These marks are reproduced (read) at a much higher speed of the tape (or of the head). With the aid of a microcomputer, any playback sequence and frequency can be chosen.
