Device for gripping and/or clamping articles, especially workpieces which are susceptible to damage and/or deformation. To avoid damage and/or deformation of susceptible workpieces (for example piston rods or hydraulic cylinders) during gripping and clamping, such workpieces must be handled with the greatest care. The device illustrated in Figure 1 and Figure 2 is characterised by: at least one container which can be filled with a pressure medium and emptied, is made of flexible and/or extensible material, is supported by a support plate (2) allocated to the container and comes to rest in a pressurised state subject to magnetic flux against the workpiece (3) which is pressed in this way against at least one fixed clamping surface (1). The device can be used to grip and clamp workpieces which are susceptible to damage and/or deformation with a low surface pressure and take hold of workpieces which have a very great variety of cross-sectional shapes without special clamping jaws over a large clamping range and to manipulate them by means of a crane. <IMAGE>
