PURPOSE:To raise a transmission light quantity, and also to raise an effective sectional area by using a light transmitting member whose section has a roughly polygonal shape, for a core of an optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:A core 1a consists of a quartz compound glass fiber having a square section whose one side is 1mum. A clad 2a protects the outside circumference of the core 1a, and also consists of a quartz compound glass being a regular square whose outside size is 30mum as to its one side since the core 1a forms a total reflecting surface. A refractive index of the core 1a is made larger than a refractive index of the clad 2. In this way, a light which is made incident to one end of the core 1a is reflected totally in the core 1a and sent out efficiently to the other end. In this case, since the sectional shape of the core 1a is square, the quantity of a light to be transmitted can be raised by 21.5%, comparing with a conventional one having the same diameter. Also, it is possible to arrange this optical fiber in one line and use it in the shape of a sheet. |
