PURPOSE:A glaze composition that is obtained by adding a specific water-soluble polymer to the glaze starting materials as an additive, thus showing improved slurry dispersibility, storage stability, spreadability on and adhesion to ceramic wares. CONSTITUTION:A water-soluble polymer such as a copolymer from maleic anhydride and a vinyl or vinylidene compound copolymerizable with maleic anhydride such as alpha-olefin, styrene or vinyl chloride, e.g., isobutylenmaleic anhydride copolymer or styrene-maleic anhydride, is added to the glaze composition, when the starting substances for glaze such as frits, feldspar or silica are subjected to wet grinding. The resultant composition is well dispersible and shows good storage stability, when made into a slurry. Further, it shows high spreadability to cause no cracking or coat peeling in the ceramic wares after baking.
