PURPOSE:To provide an alkaline battery exhibiting an improved weak-current discharge characteristic during long-term preservation by using as a gelling agent an alkali metal salt of a copolymer consisting of an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid and the phenyl-substituted body of an unsaturated monocarboxylic acid. CONSTITUTION:In an alkaline battery, an alkali metal salt of a copolymer consisting of an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid such as maleic acid and the phenyl- substituted body of an unsaturated monocarboxylic acid such as cinnamic acid is used as a gelling agent for alkaline electrolyte. The molar ratio of the monomer of the phenyl-substituted body of the above unsaturated monocarboxylic acid to the above unsaturated dicarboxylic acid should be in the range of around 0.2- 2.0. It is desirable that the above copolymer be either a straight chain copolymer having a molecular-weight of over 400,000 or a cross-linked copolymer. By the means mentioned above, the alkaline battery of this invention has an improved discharge performance during weak discharging as compared to the conventional alkaline battery in which the polymer of an unsaturated monocarboxylic acid alone is used as a gelling agent. |
