PURPOSE:To reduce the load on a CPU to transmit compressed and non-compressed image data by providing a compression/non-compression discriminating means on a communication controller CCU or providing this means in accordance with the indication from the CPU. CONSTITUTION:Image data in a memory 1 is sent to a CCU 4 by the control of a CPU 2. The CCU 4 transfers received data to an attachment LA 7 corresponding to a line, through which data should be transmitted, as it is. In the LA 7, the start part of image data is read in a data attribute discriminating part 5 to discriminate whether data is compressed or non-compressed. If it is discriminated that data following the start part is non-compressed data, the compression processing of MH, MR, or the like is performed in a compression processing part 6, and data is sent to a communication control part 8. Meanwhile, if it is discriminated that data is compressed data, this data is sent to the communication control part 8 directly. Next, data is sent to a communication line 10 through a MODEM 9 to which the LA 7 corresponds, and data is received by a facsimile in the transmission destination.
