The tension applied to the yarn, passing through the false twisting stages, is intermittently reduced and restored. Pref. the changes in yarn tension occur in successive time intervals of equal duration. The yarn tension changes are effected by momentarily shortening the length of yarn between the heating zone (13) and the false twister (15), where the yarn changes direction by at least 90 deg. A rotating yarn guide (20) oscillates while the yarn passes round it, between heater and false twister. In the claimed appts. the rotating yarn guide (20), to vary the yarn tension, has a cylinder with a continuous hollow throat and a cylindrical base surface, with its axis at an angle to the cylinder rotary axis.
