Process for the preparation of monohydrotrihalosilane from residual silicon

Process which increases the degree of use of silicon which takes part in the synthesis of organohalosilanes by the direct process. It consists in bringing the residual silicon into contact simultaneously with gaseous hydrogen halide and gaseous alkyl halide to form a contact mass of residual silicon and in heating the contact mass of residual silicon at a temperature below the temperature at which significant alkylation of the contact mass of residual silicon takes place, by virtue of which the residual silicon reacts at this temperature to provide reaction products containing monohydrotrihalosilane.
