Glue and paste(starch), used in the paper and pasteboard industry, is prepared by a UHF radiation method. Subjecting native starch, having a 4-60% moisture content, to ultrahigh frequency (UHF) radiation of 2450 MHZ 300W for<=15 min. gave products having low crystallinity, and good rheolitic properties, hot H2O dispersibility, and suceptibility to amylolytic attack by α- and β-amylase. Thus, granular maize starch containing 35% H2O was subjected to UHF radiation at 300 W and 90≦̸C for 40 seconds to give a product having a crystallinity of 0, compared to 0.45 for untreated starch.
