PURPOSE:To provide the titled ion scavenger consisting of a compd. which forms a crown ether-like structure when it is a cis type isomer but does not when it is a trans type isomer, and capable of scavenging and releasing metallic ion effectively under irradiation with light. CONSTITUTION:The photosensitive metallic ion scavenger consisting of a compd. of the formula (where Y is methoxy, ethoxy, methyl, ethyl or halogen) is prepared by substituting hydrogen aloms at positions 7,7' of thioindigo with -CO OCH2CH2OX (where X is methyl or ethyl), or those at positions 4,4', 5,5' and 6,6' with methoxy, ethoxy, methyl, ethyl or halogen. EFFECT:Metallic ion scavenging ability can be controlled reversibly within a wide range by varying the wavelength of irradiation light. The scavenger can concentrate specified ions, for it has metallic ion selectivity.
