Anthracene-bis-hydrazone compds. [1 and their acid addn. salts and quat. ammonium salts, which are useful as antibacterials for inhibiting the growth of transplanted mouse tumours and for inducing the regression and/or palliation of leukaemia and related cancers, were prepd. by reacting NH2-NR1R2 and II. Z is -(CH2)2-CR= or -CHR- CH= ( n= 0-3; R = H or up to 4C alkyl, C3-6 cycloalkyl, phenyl, or benzyl); R1 is H or up to 4C alkyl; R2 is -CXR7 or III (P = 1-3, q = 0-2; R' = H or up to 4C alkyl; R" = up to 4C alkyl; R7 = -NR1-(CH2) m-NR'R" (m = 2-5, -NR'R" = pyrrolidino, piperidino); X is oxo or thioxo; R3,R4,R5,R6 are halogen, hydroxy, nitro, or C1-3 alkyl.
