PURPOSE:To prepare the titled pitch with high performance, by effecting thermal cracking of a mixture of a residual oil of distillation obtained as byproduct of catalytic cracking of petroleum and an aromatic heavy oil consisting mainly of aromatic compd. having four or more rings and removing insoluble substances and light fractions. CONSTITUTION:50-90pts.wt. (A) residual oil of distillation having a boiling point of 400 deg.C or higher is mixed with 50-10pts.wt. (B) aromatic heavy oil. (A) is obtained by removing light fractions from decantation oil, a byproduct of fluid catalytic cracking of petroleum. (B) contains at least 60wt% mixture of aromatic compds. having four or more rings, e.g. pyrene, and partly hydrogenated product thereof. The mixture of (A) and (B) is subjected to thermal cracking reaction at 400-470 deg.C for 1-10hr in an inert atmosphere. After removal of insoluble substances, the reaction product is subjected to vacuum distillation to remove light fractions and produce a pitch containing 70% or higher optically anisotropic substances.
