When a piston (6) operates in a cylinder (7) at high pressure, the high pressure may lead to a radial expansion of the cylinder (7). In a piston seal with an axially split piston ring (1) made of hard material and inserted into a groove in the piston (6) as the primary sealing element and a rubber-elastic clamping ring (3) as a secondary sealing element sealing off the piston ring (1) in the groove, a tough-elastic plastics ring (2) is inserted between the piston ring (1) and the clamping ring (3), protecting the clamping ring (3) from damage in the region of the gap in the split piston ring (1) when the width of the gap changes due to expansion of the cylinder at high pressure. <IMAGE>
