The invention relates to a process for making paper or cardboard of a higher dry strength than hitherto by the addition of an additive of the polysaccharide type and a synthetic retention agent in smaller quantities than hitherto. Moreover, a filler can be added to the fibre suspension. According to the invention, only 0.2-3% of the polysaccharide type and 0.005-0.1% of synthetic retention agent are added to the fibre suspension. The addition is made either into the essentially filler-free fibre suspension, or a part of the retention agent is added to the fibre suspension before the filler, or pretreated filler is added to the fibre material at any phase.
