A cutting assembly for destroying used hypodermic needles prior to disposal. The cutting assembly comprises a pair of cutter blades (16), (18) mounted over an opening (40) in an elevated platform and normally positioned to permit insertion of a hypodermic needle substantially into the platform opening. An actuator (20) overlying the cutter blades defines a tapered funnel surface (94) for guiding the hypodermic needle substantially into the platform opening. An actuator (20) overlying the cutter blades defines a tapered funnel surface (94) for guiding the hypodermic needle (12) downwardly into the platform opening and is movable to displace one of the cutter blades for cutting the needle which thereupon falls through the platform opening into a disposable receptacle (22) supported therebelow. In one preferred form, the platform comprises an integral portion of a waste station including a separate disposable container (26) for receiving other waste items, such as syringes from which the hypodermic needles have been severed by the cutting assembly. |
