PURPOSE:To reduce the amount of information to be stored at a reception side and to simplify a constitution by storing codes of a white and a black run successively in the increasing order of run length, and comparing those received codes successively in the increasing order of run length in an MH code table and deciding on run length. CONSTITUTION:The contents of the MH code table are stored in a storage part 5 in the increasing order of run length at the reception side of a band compression system facsimile. Then, an input signal enters an input part 1 to detect its section flag, a table scanning part 3 is set, and a counter 6 is set to ''0'' to read a white code following the section flag in a decoding part 2. Then, the data read in the decoding part 2 is compared with the data stored in the storage part 5 successively, and when the values are coincident each other at a counter 6, then it is transmitted as run length to a data storage part 4.
