The invention relates to a process for improving the filling properties of tobacco, such as sliced tobacco leaves or ribs or tobacco additives, by treatment with a nitrogen- and/or argon-containing treatment gas at pressures up to 1,000 bar in an autoclave and a heat treatment following decompression. According to the invention, charging the reactor with tobacco and with the treatment gas and/or its decompression is carried out in such a manner that the discharged tobacco fed to a subsequent heat treatment has an entry temperature for the heat treatment of below 0 DEG C. This is achieved by precooling the treatment gas before or during the charging, and/or by additionally cooling the autoclave and/or by precooling the tobacco and/or by injecting supercooled or liquefied treatment gas into the autoclave. In particular, the invention relates to a process having multiple-stage charging and decompression, which is carried out in a cascade-like manner.
