The invention discloses a method and an apparatus for controlling a sideways unstable movement of a strip undergoing a rolling operation, the transverse displacement of a strip entering a rolling mill being directly recorded and the roll gaps being adjusted on the working and driving side of the rolls in such a way that the transverse displacement detected is reduced to zero, sideways unstable movement of the strip thereby being prevented. It is thereby possible to prevent damage to the lateral edges of the strip to be rolled, to avoid breaking of the strip, to guarantee efficient and effective rolling and to increase production of rolled strips.
