The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for the puffing of tobacco, especially of cut tobacco stems. The tobacco is fed to the inlet of a closed conveying channel. Steam is introduced transversely to the extent of the conveying channel in the conveying direction, at a temperature and at a pressure that warm the tobacco in the conveying channel to a temperature between 100.5 DEG C and 120 DEG C, before the tobacco leaves the conveying channel through an outlet. Thereafter, the tobacco is dried. The steam fed in is in a pressure range of 2.5 to 25 bar (absolute) and a temperature range of 126 to 400 DEG C. <IMAGE>
