In a sorting device 10 for crown tops 11 with a deflector 14 for separately leading off crown tops 11 coming in incorrectly laterally positioned in a feed shaft 12 there is the risk that if crown tops which are punched out incorrectly and have for example gaps in the crown edge are located under said device, said tops cannot be correctly deflected by the deflection tongues 18 and remain hanging thereon and block the device 10. In order to prevent this, two brush plates 21 which are driven by motor synchronously in opposite directions in the conveying direction of the crown tops 11 are provided at the same level. Said brush plates 21 extend laterally into the feed shaft 12 for the crown tops through corresponding openings 22 in such a way that their circumferences in the centre of the feed shaft 12 touch the deflection tongues 18. Depending on the length of the in-coming crown top 11, one of the brush plates 21 which touches the outside of the base of this crown top exerts a lateral pressure on said crown top and thus deflects the crown top reliably into its two assigned guide grooves 17. <IMAGE>
