The gear shaper serves to produce profiles on workpieces and has a rotatably driven pinion-type cutter which performs a stroke movement in the direction of its axis of rotation. The pinion-type cutter is provided with a ram spindle on which a driven gear sits in such a way as to be locked in terms of rotation. The driven gear meshes with a rotatable drive part on a drive shaft. The drive part is displaceable in the direction of its axis of rotation so that an axial displacement is superimposed on its rotary movement. The pinion-type cutter is thereby given additional rotation. In this way, tooth systems with any helix angle and any helix direction can be produced.
