Identity card and process for producing the same

Identity card with alphanumeric characters, which are in embossed form and can be used as a relief plate. As a protection against forgery for the relief-embossed characters, the card has a layer which is removed congruently with respect to the embossed characters or is changed in its colour impression by the embossing operation. In one embodiment, the layer lies on the surface of the card and is chemically or mechanically removed in the top region of the relief-embossed locations. In another embodiment, the card has inside it, for example, a microcapsule ink layer, the capsules being destroyed by the pressure occurring during the embossing operation and a permanent colour change occurring as a result.
