PURPOSE:To obtain a phenolic resin with flexibility and high water resistance, capable of affording cured product of readily softening ability even at relatively low temperatures, by the reaction, in an alkaline condition, of a blend prepared by incorporating a phenol with each specific proportion of an aldehyde and hydantoin. CONSTITUTION:(A) A phenol, (B) an aldehyde (e.g., formaldehyde), and (C) a hydantoin (pref. 5,5-dimethyl hydantoin) are blended in such a molar ratio as to be 1:0.5-2:0.2-5, respectively, followed by adding a catalyst such as an alkali, carrying out a copolymerization in an alkaline condition, thus obtaining the objective phenolic resin. USE:Resins for decorative boards, laminates, etc.
