A filamentary member for incorporation in a cable is made by joining a smaller filament 1 to a larger wire 4 by fixing a metal sleeve 3 on the end portion of the filament 1, and welding or brazing the sleeve 3 and the wire 4 end to end. The smaller filament 1 has a plastics sheathing 2 having substantially the same external profile as the wire 4, so that the cable incorporating the member has a mass per unit length which varies stepwise along its length while its diameter remains substantially constant. <IMAGE> |
